Welcome back to Londonist: Croydon Edit. Piloted by Londonist editor and Croydonian Will Noble, it's about all things in the borough of Croydon. Cronxicles is my monthly round up for paid subscribers: Croydon news (largely the positive kind), and what to look forward to in the month ahead. I’ve also got a cosmic giveaway for you this month from the stellar folks at Croydon Spaceport.
What’s new in Croydon
CROYDONOPOLIS: On Thursday 5 September my book Croydonopolis: A Journey to the Greatest City That Never Was, publishes. I spent a year and a half researching and writing this baby, and I’m really proud of it. If Croydon is your bag, I hope you’ll like it too. It’ll be available all over the internet, and in some bookshops (Croydon Waterstones told me they’ll have some copies in). Note: My Croydonopolis Open House talk at Croydon Town Hall is now fully booked, but I hope to do more in the near future.
TRICKLE: East Croydon’s new bar, Trickle is now open for business, on Dingwall Road. I was down there on the second day of opening (it was busy too), and was impressed that as well as their much-touted cocktails on tap, they had a couple of very decent beers. Nice modernist decor too. I hope it continues to do well—it’ll be a nice place to stop for a drink once in a while after getting off the train.
BRICK LANE BEIGEL: In more openings news, it’s been brought to my attention that you can now get a Brick Lane Beigel from Boxpark Croydon, which negates the need for a painfully long Overground ride when you get a hankering for some smoked salmon and cream cheese.
CONFESSIONS OF A CRYSTAL PALACE FAN: Not my confessions (I’m a Liverpool FC man, sorry), but those of Colossive Press’ Jane Gibbens Murphy, who’s created a zine about being an obsessive Eagles fan called Glad All Over: Confessions of a Crystal Palace Fan. It’s described as “a story of bun rounds, half-and-half hats, steel walls, Michael Flatley and bad pizza choices”. If you know a Palace fan, you’ve just found their stocking filler. And psst, you can win a copy of this later on in the newsletter.
